Healing minds. Rebuilding lives. Restoring dignity.

“Restoring Hope, Rebuilding Lives”

Bread for the Needy (BREFON) walks with survivors of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, children born of war, and families living with mental illness across the Acholi sub-region — through counselling, protection, education and the means to earn a living.

Who we are

An indigenous organisation, rooted in the communities it serves

Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Gulu City, BREFON is a voluntary, non-political, non-religious and non-profit humanitarian and development organisation.

We improve the lives of vulnerable individuals, families and communities through integrated humanitarian assistance and sustainable community development — with special attention to children, women, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities, refugees, returnees and war victims.

Trauma, poverty and exclusion do not arrive one at a time, so we do not treat them one at a time. Our programmes are designed to work together around the same household.

Children Born of War are still waiting for the peace everyone else received

Thousands of children were conceived in captivity during the LRA insurgency, born to young women and girls who had been abducted and forced into marriage. Many are now adolescents and young adults.

The war ended. Their exclusion did not. They face stigma, contested identity, and limited access to education, health services, ancestral land and inheritance rights — alongside the untreated trauma of the years they survived.

Sustained mental health support, livelihood opportunities, legal protection and community reconciliation are what turn survival into a future. BREFON programme team, Gulu City

We are still here after the cameras have gone

The emergency in Northern Uganda ended years ago. The need did not. BREFON staff and volunteers come from these communities, and they are still walking to the households that no clinic-based service reaches.
